Backer Board, Vinyl and Mud!

This past weekend we started the much anticipated kitchen floor remodel. We spent a fun filled Friday night moving appliances out of the kitchen into my make shift kitchen (my dining room). Saturday morning Joe came over bright and early to help us begin the demolition. We would have been lost without Joe, so a BIG thank you to Joe for all the help!

We began demolition and the first flooring of linoleum and ¼ inch ply wood came off without to much trouble. Underneath this was a vinyl flooring that was screwed down to another piece of ¼ inch ply wood (not supposed to be screwed down!). So this made for one long day. After lunch we took a break to go to Lowes to get some necessary items (which I ended up going to 3 times in a 2 hour period). Mike and Joe also did some plumping and installed water valves.

Pre-Demolition:

Joe had a great idea to make hinges for the benches on the kitchen table so that I can use them for storage. I am very excited to have more storage in the kitchen as currently the seats are wasted space. Thanks Joe for the great idea!

We also go the paint for the kitchen (I went with the "greyer" blue). We finished ripping up all the floors by 9:30pm Saturday night.

Sunday morning we got up bright and early and began cutter the backer board. We then used "mud" (why don’t they just call it cement?) to apply the backer board to the subfloor. We then needed to screw backer board screws to the backer board. I have never used so many screws! At around 10:30pm last night we finished the flooring. This week we will paint and on Saturday morning we will begin to Tile! After a very long weekend, we are exhausted and very sore but excited that the linoleum is gone!

The Aftermath:

Since all of the appliances had to be moved out of the kitchen, laundry room and bathroom some of the appliances are being stored on our covered deck. I am sure our neighbors love the toilet in view from their decks.
